Healthcare & Social Workers Association of Jamaica and the BITU pursue Affiliation

The newly formed Healthcare Social Workers Association of Jamaica (HSWAJ) met with officials of the BITU at their Duke Street head offices on February 10, 2017, to pursue discussions which should see the Association becoming affiliates of the Union.

The BITU has found merit pursing a relationship with this dynamic but under recognized group of workers, whose core functions include assessing the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment and communicating these to other members of the health team, as well as establishing links with relevant state agencies concerned with health and welfare of children and utilize their services in the interest of patients and their families while maintaining comprehensive record keeping systems and provide social reports for members of the health team and relevant agencies.

The Association’s administrative structure, membership base, certification and considerations which could possibly form terms of an agreement among other things were discussed.

The Healthcare Social Workers Association of Jamaica (“HSWAJ”), was incorporated  to operate solely in Jamaica. Their nature of business is listed as “Civic Organization”.

Discussions with the Association who remain desirous of becoming affiliates of the Union are set to continue.
